New development impresses new cabinet member

Posted on Friday 11th August 2017

Councillor Jane Mudd, Newport City Council's Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing, visited new homes built on the site of a former derelict pub.

She also met one of the residents at Pobl Group's development in Commercial Road, Newport.

Nine apartments with undercroft parking and a four-bedroomed house, built on the site of the derelict King's Arms and Top of the Range public houses, were completed earlier this year.

Residents including Andrew Kelly began moving in last February and are still delighted with their new homes which are rented through Charter Housing

Councillor Mudd, who took over the cabinet portfolio in May, chatted with Mr Kelly in his smart new apartment.

"It was fantastic to see what a difference this sympathetic development has made to the area and it is another great example of partnership working.

"Pobl have provided an excellent quality of accommodation and I would like to thank Andrew for inviting me into his apartment which he has turned into a lovely home."

Mr Kelly moved in last February and is still enjoying living there. He said: "I like the fact that there is a lot of space. I really look forward to coming back home after I've been out for the day and Charter is a really good landlord."

Rhys Parry, Pobl Director of Development said "It was great to have the opportunity to both visit Mr Kelly and see first-hand how he has settled into his beautiful new home, and meet Cllr Mudd, the new Cabinet Member for Regeneration and Housing.

These new homes form part of a larger programme of affordable housing developments in the city centre, being delivered by Newport City Council and Pobl, as part of the Welsh Government's Vibrant and Viable Places programme.
