Newport Velodrome

The Wales National Velodrome in Newport is one of only four internationally recognised indoor velodromes in Britain and is Wales’ official National Velodome.

Velodrome sessions and courses

The velodrome offers a range of sessions and courses to suit all abilities.

Cycling timetable

Monday

Easy Rider 2pm – 4pm all ages

Experience needed but this session is designed to accommodate a wide range of abilities. An experienced coach is able to offer a good workout for those who want it through to those keeping their hand in with some steady riding. Improvers can benefit from the group activity and improve their fitness and skills in readiness for accreditation. All ages welcome.

Beginners 3 and 4 week course * Booking essential

5pm-6.30pm

10-14 years

Introduction to the exciting discipline of Track Cycling in a safe and structured environment with a Youth friendly coach. Completion of the beginner course will allow riders to access to the ever popular Saturday morning Youth Drop in session and any of the drop in sessions during the week. 10 riders max.

Beginners and Improvers 3 Week Course* Booking essential

8pm-10pm

14 years plus

Introduction to the exciting discipline of Track Cycling in a safe and structured environment. Skills learnt on the Beginner Course are extended and refined on the Improver course. Completion of the Beginner Course is normally followed by attending an Improver Course in readiness for Accreditation. Completion of the Beginner Course allows riders to access any of the drop in sessions during the week except SQT and Vets session.

Tuesday

Lunchtime Drop-in

12pm – 2pm

all ages

A coached session for all standards of riders. Session content varies depending on the season and is tailored around the requirements of the riders attending each week. Session is endurance focussed with longer drills but sprinters are welcome to attend and fit their efforts around the endurance drills.

Early Evening Youth Drop-in

5pm-6.45pm

10-14 years

This session focusses on race skills and is the feeder session to attending Track League. General skills and drills are supplemented by coach led racing to offer a stimulating and stretching session for young riders. Ideal for those who are looking for another session to add to attendance at the Saturday Youth Drop In or for those who cannot attend on a Saturday.

Winter and Spring Track League * Booking essential

6.45pm-10pm

all ages

Runs from mid September to mid March. 4 league format with 5 races per league per evening. Leagues based on age and experience. C League is a youth league for riders beginning their racing career aged from 12-16, B+ League is for more experienced youth riders and adults looking for a good workout. B League is for adults only looking to gain experience racing or improving fitness to move into B+ league. A league contains strong and skilful riders from Youth A with dispensation and adults. Wednesday

Early Bird

7am – 9am

all ages

Thursday

Lunchtime Drop-in

12-2pm

all ages

A coached session for all standards of riders. Session content varies and is balanced to suit the needs of riders attending with sprint drills and endurance drills. Also used as a session for riders looking to refine technique ahead of major championships where the coach can normally accommodate individual riders looking to do specific efforts in their preferred discipline (subject to numbers allowing)

SQT (Structured Quality Training)

8pm-10pm

14 years and above

Accredited riders only. An experienced coach will lead riders through group drills to develop and improve fitness and skills during the winter months. SQT runs from September to April. Pre booking advised as these sessions can regularly sell out. 40 riders maximum.

Friday

Veteran Drop-in

4pm-7pm

Gents 40+, all ladies

Accredited riders only. An experienced coach will lead riders through group drills to develop and improve fitness and skills. Drills tend to be endurance based with some speed work depending on season. Riders may attend for the full 3 hours or drop in early or late.

Saturday

Youth Drop-in

9.30am-12

10 – 16 years,

The main youth session of the week open to all youth riders who have progressed beyond beginner level. Coached by an NCC coach and volunteer Club coaches, this session combines skills development and fitness improvement within a fun but structured environment. Different ability groups cater for all standards of riders.

Sunday

Cycle Tots

10am – 10.45am

2 ½ - 6 years:

Led by a qualified cycling coach this teaches the skills and confidence required to ride a bike without stabilisers. Takes place indoors in the Velodrome building. Suitable for non riders.

Cycle Fun

11am – 11.45am

4 – 6 years

Led by a qualified cycling coach this is designed to take riders ready to move from stabilizers to riding confidently on two wheels. Takes place indoors in the Velodrome building.

GoRide Skills Cycling

12.15pm-1.15pm

6-12 years

A qualified cycle coach teaches correct use of gears, brakes, cornering and safe riding of a bike by extending the skills learnt at Cycle Fun for older riders using the Newport Stadium at the Newport International Sports Village. Bring your own bike or try one of ours!

Outdoor Track Cycling

1.30pm-2.30pm

8-12 years

A qualified cycling coach teaching specific techniques relating to track cycling using our new fixed wheel track bikes. Cyclists must be confident bike riders. Sessions take place in the Newport Stadium at the Newport International Sports Village.

Booking essential sessions must be either booked online or by calling 01633 656757.

All other sessions are drop in sessions where you can either book a space in advance OR just turn up and ride. SQT and Vets sessions are particularly popular and it is advisable to book as we have a track limit of 40 riders for these sessions.
