
- The Competition is open to pianists of any nationality under 25 years
(born on or after 1st September 1981). - Applications may be made using the on-line application form which should be submitted no later than 1st May 2006. The entrance fee for each competitor is £50. Alternatively, you should e-mail piano.competition@newport.gov.uk requesting an entry pack, not forgetting to provide your full postal address.
- Each applicant must forward references from two distinguished musicians, who may also be referred to for further opinion on the applicant's ability. These musicians must certify that the competitor has reached the standard of accomplishment expected of professional solo performers. In the case of a competitor trained at a national music institution, one reference should be from the Director or Principal.
- Each applicant must forward a copy of their birth certificate with their references.
- Competitors may be selected to attend the first round to be held in London on July 10th, 11th and 12th 2006 at a venue in central London.

Any work written after 1945.
A public concert recital. Competitors invited to take part in the second round will be expected to present a 45 minute recital of their own choice which should include a Liszt study and a Chopin Nocturne. At this stage there will be a maximum of six competitors. This round will take place at The Riverfront, Newport in October 2006 on Wednesday, 11th October and Thursday, 12th October 2006. Not more than three recitals will take place in each concert.
Three competitors will be invited to take part in the final round and they
will perform a concerto with the BBC National Orchestra
of Wales. This will take place at The Riverfront, Newport on Saturday, 14th October 2006.
The rehearsal with orchestra will be held on the afternoon of Saturday, 14th October 2006.

Individual reports will be given to candidates on request and the decision of the judges must be accepted as final. Competitors accepted for the second and third rounds will be paid reasonable travel expenses. Accommodation and practice facilities will be provided free of charge by the organisers. If the standard reached in the final of the competition is not considered to be high enough, the award will be withheld.
The winner will receive £5000 and concerts in Wales, including a recital in the Swansea Festival on Monday, 16th October 2006, subject to dates being arranged and subject to the appropriate standard being reached. The second prize-winner will receive £2500 and the third prize-winner will receive £1000. The remaining semi-finalists will each receive £500.
