2 x Recycling Scheme
Well done! Recycling rates have hit record levels since Newport joined the 2xRecycling Scheme. By disposing of as little rubbish as possible we will be able to channel resources into improving our schemes even further in the future.
Newport residents recycled and composted 31% of their rubbish last year. This is a great achievement. But we need to drastically increase this figure if we are to avoid paying landfill taxes and other penalties in the future. We have to meet the Welsh Assembly’s 40% target by 2010.
Not reaching the target would mean Newport City Council will get fined. By recycling as much of our waste as we can we will not only improve our environment, we will also help to protect the health of our economy.
Over recent years the council and Wastesavers have expanded recycling and composting schemes in the city, like weekly recycling collections, alternate week orange bin collections as well as a new trial for food waste.
Having changed to alternate week refuse collections, the 2xRecycling Scheme continues to boost the city’s recycling rate.
