Newport’s Southern Distributor Road (SDR) opened to traffic in December 2004 ahead of the scheduled completion date of March 2005. The SDR route extends from M4 junction 24 Coldra roundabout, in the east, to Pont Ebbw roundabout, in the west.
Urban regeneration company Newport Unlimited has described the opening of the SDR as a critical piece of Newport’s regeneration jigsaw. The new road is designed to improve the environment in the city centre, taking traffic away from residential areas, and improving access to industrial areas in the east and south of the city.
The SDR is the biggest local authority Private Finance Initiative (PFI) scheme in Wales. The work was carried out by Morgan Vinci, the contractors appointed by Newport City Council to design, build, finance and operate over the next 40 years.
