Countryside
The Countryside team in Newport City Council looks after the following areas:
Countryside Access
Access to the countryside, or to green spaces within the built area is of vital importance to the well-being of communities, particularly in urban areas. It is essential to maintain, enhance, and promote links between urban and rural areas, including Public Rights of Way.
The council is currently looking for people to get involved in improving public access to land around Newport through membership of Newport Local Access Forum – why not get in touch?
Trees and Hedgerows
Trees and woodlands are usually protected by Tree Preservation Orders (TPOs). The service is responsible for maintaining TPOs, all trees in conservation areas, and advising on applications under the Hedgerow Regulations.
Biodiversity
Nature Conservation is an important part of the team’s work. Our main objectives are to protect, enhance and promote Newport’s wildlife and habitats.
Environmental Education
Environmental education is a crucial part of the Countryside Team’s work. Awareness and understanding of environmental issues and biodiversity can lead to positive action, which eventually leads to change.
Landscape Conservation & Enhancement
The landscape of Newport is often seen as dominated by the urban and industrial environment. Look closer and it is possible to discover a rich and varied landscape.
The topography of Newport is diverse, ranging from the flat, drained farmland of the Gwent Levels along the Severn coast to the broad valleys of the rivers Usk and Rhymney, and the forest and rolling hills of Wentwood and Llanvaches.
One of the Council’s policies is to protect and enhance features which make an important contribution to the quality and interest of Newport’s landscape. Our aim is to ensure that landscape quality and sensitivity is taken into account in the planning decision-making process and require developers to provide sympathetic landscaping schemes.
