Press Release
Chartist mural future
Newport city council leader Bob Bright has set out his views on the future of the Chartist mural which cannot stay in its current position when the city centre development begins later this year.
Councillor Bright said:
“This is an exciting time for Newport city centre in which the plans that have been talked about for many years are quickly becoming a reality.
Everyone I have spoken with is both excited and supportive of the plans for the Friars Walk development and we are delighted to be working with Modus to make it reality.
The mural will not be staying in its current position as this whole area will be demolished when the developers are on site. We have always stressed to the developers the importance of the Chartist mural to the people of Newport.
A condition of the planning permission is for Modus to provide a strategy which includes details of the mural’s future. The planning committee must agree to this before the development work can begin. This decision will be made later in the year.
As leader of the council I believe the mural should be relocated to a new site in the city centre either in its original form or if this is not possible, then a direct reconstruction.”
