Community Memories

Welcome to the Community Memories Project

“Oral history records the living memories and feelings of all kinds of people, many otherwise hidden from history, and creates a more vivid picture of our past.”

Community Memories is an oral history project delivered by Newport Museums & Heritage Service. We work in partnership with children & young people from Newport’s Minority Ethnic Communities to encourage individuals to explore their past and share their life stories with the wider society. These experiences are largely absent from Wales’ recorded history and Newport wants to acknowledge the important contribution made by these groups to the City’s unique heritage.

The project has been made possible through Cymorth, a source of funding from the Welsh Assembly. The project now employs a full time project officer and two part time Arts Development officers. Recent events include participation in the “Follow the Star” lantern project with Pillgwenlly Primary School, workshops to celebrate Black History Month, a successful Summer Fun family craft programme and oral history recordings with members of the community.

To find out about the project and what we are up to at the moment explore our website and then get in touch! Why not share your stories by using our online form? The project officer can provide more information on what you see here, how to get involved and would love to hear your comments about the site and the project in general.
