Community Memories
Community Memories
Community Memories was an oral history project delivered by Newport Museums & Heritage Service. We worked in partnership with children & young people from Newport’s Minority Ethnic Communities to encourage individuals to explore their past and share their life stories with the wider society. These experiences are largely absent from Wales’ recorded history and Newport wanted to acknowledge the important contribution made by these groups to the City’s unique heritage.
The project was made possible through Cymorth, a source of funding from the Welsh Assembly. The project organized events, in partnership with the community, to celebrate cultural festivals including Eid and Diwali. We participated in Black History Month, ran a successful family learning programme and recorded the stories of community members.
Community History
We are interested in recording stories and memories from people throughout the community.
“Oral history records the living memories and feelings of all kinds of people, many otherwise hidden from history, and creates a more vivid picture of our past.”
