Newport Positive Futures

Positive Futures Newport is a sports and activity based social inclusion programme, funded by the Home Office Crime and Drug Strategy Directorate, Big Lottery Fund, managed nationally by Crime Concern, and locally through Newport City Council’s Sports Development Unit.

Positive Futures Newport began in May 2002, and works with young people across 4 wards in Newport, Bettws, Duffryn, Pillgwenlly and Ringland. We also run a daytime referral programme where young people on alternative education access sports and activities, working towards achieving accreditations.

Any young person from ages 10 – 19 in the Positive Futures target wards can access the sessions. We also provide a comprehensive service for young people who are referred to us by a broad range of agencies. The identification of ‘at risk’ young people forms a large part of the project.

Newport Positive Futures aims to offer positive alternatives to substance misuse and anti-social behaviour through participation in sports and activities. By working with agencies and communities we look to create safer and more inclusive communities by building a culture of respect, increasing youth volunteering and providing quality access to services for young people in their communities. We strive to support the educational, personal and social achievement of young people by working together with key partners and agencies.

For further information regarding this service please contact the Positive Futures Sports Development Officer or visit www.positivefutures.gov.uk
