South East Wales Consortium (SEWC)
Under the Welsh Assembly Government’s ‘Making the Connections Agenda’, Newport’s Education Service works in a consortium partnership with the education services in Blaenau Gwent, Cardiff, Monmouthshire, Newport and Torfaen. The vision of the SEWC is:
“Maximising the potential of all our learners through efficient and effective collaboration”
The collaborative work between member councils includes:
- performance management for Headteachers;
- school improvement;
- school and Council staff continued professional development (CPD) programmes;
- co-ordination of WAG’s RAISE project;
- professional Headship Induction Programme;
- higher Level Teaching Assistant training;
- basic skills within the 14-19 Learning Pathways.
In addition to the above future areas of work for the SEWC for 2008-2011, are:
- collaboration on tri-level reform in line with WAG’s School Effectiveness Framework;
- establishing and developing collaborative good practice networks to facilitate school learning communities at local and regional level to support effective pedagogy;
- inclusion and Additional Learning Needs (ALN);
- Welsh medium provision;
- continuation and development of the successful collaborative services;
- increasing joint commissioning to raise standards and provide economy of scale.
