Learning and Education
Additional Learning Needs
Every child is individual. They all develop and learn at different rates. Some children find learning easy and some find it hard. With the right help all children develop at their own pace. This means that within a classroom, different teaching styles will be needed, taking into account the abilities, strengths, weaknesses and interests of the children. These different approaches to learning will help most children make progress. Some may however need more support.
If you or the school are concerned that your child is not making progress, it is possible that they may have special educational needs. The Special Educational Needs pages give information on the statutory assessment process and school support for children with special educational needs.
Educational Psychologists work closely with teachers and parents to help children who are having difficulties with:
- Learning and general development, including reading, writing, spelling and numbers.
- Emotions and behaviour.
- Making good relationships with other children and with adults.
Educational Psychologists aim to bring about positive changes for children and young people to help them make better progress in learning. The Educational Psychology Service page gives more information on the role of the Service in Newport.
The Gwent Education Multi-Ethnic Service (GEMS) provides support to those pupils in nursery, primary and secondary education in Newport for whom neither English nor Welsh is their first language, by helping pupils to improve their English language skills. The GEMS page gives more information on the work of the Service.
