Affordable Homes
Newport City Living
Want to get on the property ladder? With options including shared ownership, rent-to-buy, rent or buy, new homes in Newport are within reach.
Launched in 2005 by Newport City Council in partnership with housing associations, the idea of the Newport City Living scheme is to help create stable mixed communities by the development of quality housing and offering affordable options for people wanting a home but priced out of buying or renting a property on the open market.
How does it work?
Affordable housing is provided at below market prices for shared ownership, rent or purchase.
Properties are let or sold on the basis of need to people who have a local connection e.g. people who live or work in Newport or need to move to Newport to receive or provide support.
It is also for people who are unable to afford to purchase or rent properties available on the open market.
Why develop an affordable housing scheme?
One of the council’s aims outlined in the Community Strategy 2005 - 2015 (opens new website) is to provide quality housing at a reasonable price, in order to accommodate social and demographic change and population growth.
The council has worked hard with partners to offer affordable ways to acquire a new home, for example:
- buy 50% now and then buy more in a year or two; keep doing this a bit at a time until you have bought it all
- if you own 50% and lose your job you can revert to paying rent and keep your home
- rent, but pay more each month to build up a deposit to buy the home you live in.
- rent and save money yourselves in order to buy
There’s no catch!
The Newport City Living scheme offers a range of homes in various locations across the city, part of larger developments built by national house builders.
The homes have to meet rigorous quality standards set out by the Welsh Assembly Government.
You can be assured of a quality home at an affordable price.
