What is Access Supported Employment?

Access Supported Employment (ASE) was set up by Newport City Council in 1997 to support people with disabilities in finding appropriate employment.

An Employment Co-Coordinator and four qualified Employment Support Specialists, specialising in a wide range of support methods, work to help people with disabilities back into employment.

ASE are providers of Workstep, a government funded programme to assist and support both employers and people with disabilities in all aspects of employment.

What is Supported Employment?

Supported employment assists people with disabilities to compete in employment, giving the support needed to enable people to reach their full potential within their chosen employment field. Supported employment provides:

  • Assistance from an Employment Support specialist
  • Free information on recruitment, retention, or redevelopment as well as advice, support and recommendations
  • Specialised job training
  • On site, hands on training and support for the individual
  • Assistance with development plans
  • The opportunity to improve Equal Opportunities within the work place
  • Long-term support and input with reviewing and monitoring

Supported employment has been a major factor in moving people away from a dependence on benefits and service delivery systems to independence via competitive employment.

Recent studies have shown that supported employment for people with disabilities significantly enhances their success rate in their chosen field of employment.

Supported employment encourages people with disabilities to work within their communities enabling them to integrate socially.

How can ASE help?

ASE will provide an Employment Support Specialist to work with a disabled person wanting to find suitable employment.
