Newport’s Health, Social Care & Wellbeing Strategy

Newport City Council and Newport Local Health Board, along with other partners have prepared the second Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Strategy for Newport, which will run from April 2008 to March 2011.

The purpose of the strategy is to set out the joint vision from improving heath, wellbeing and independence of the people of Newport.

Newport’s Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Strategy represents a firm intention to work together to improve the health of the population with a set of key principles and methods:

1.

The people of Newport will have more information and will be supported in providing for themselves a healthy and fulfilled life.

2.

Work will be undertaken with children and young people and their families to encourage healthy lifestyles for future generations.

3.

More of the people at risk of ill health and/or in need of support will receive targeted advice and assistance.

4.

People will be treated with consideration and respect and the services provided will be focused on the outcome chosen by the service user. These ‘outcome focused services’ will aim to achieve the goals, aspirations and priorities of service users.

5.

The role and needs of unpaid carers as providers of substantial amounts of care to vulnerable people will be recognised and taken into account in all service planning and development. Carers’ own health and wellbeing needs will also be properly considered.

6.

More services will be provided jointly by Health and Social Care agencies, be they public, voluntary or private, and there will be more integration of service delivery.

7.

More support and services will be provided for those who need them in their won home and/or facilities in their locality

This document builds on the first Health, Social Care and Wellbeing Strategy (pdf) for the period 2005-2008.

The current Strategy represents the work of eight groups each of which have identified a number of key priorities. Each group is chaired by a senior officer from the council or LHB and reports to the Strategic Health Improvement Partnership (SHIP) which then reports to the Local Service Board.

HSCW Bulletin

The Health, Social Care & Wellbeing team produces a bulletin each month bringing together news and events from the strategic planning groups and across health and social care.

Consultation

Consultation on the current Health, Social Care & Wellbeing Strategy took place for 12 weeks from December 2007 to February 2008, a big thank you to all those who took part.

A Consultation Report (PDF) outlines the main themes of the feedback received which were used to shape the strategy according to local need.
