What we do…
We have produced a Business Self Assessment Questionnaire (pdf). It is written to assess your compliance with Health and Safety at Work legislation but we have also written it to gather information for other service areas so that they will not need to visit you unnecessarily.
The information you provide will enable us to do an assessment of your business and provide you with guidance specifically tailored to your needs. We are always happy to give you advice on compliance with Environmental Health laws.
Licensing
We licence all manner of business practices to ensure they meet safety standards and do not create a public nuisance
Food Safety
We inspect local food businesses to ensure the food you eat is prepared safely and hygienically-whether it’s food you buy in the supermarket or eat in a local restaurant.
Health and Safety At Work
We check that business premises are safe for workers and visitors, including shoppers, to use. We also investigate some types of accident in the workplace.
Port Health
We carry out inspections of ships entering the Port of Newport to ensure public health, food safety and hygiene standards are met. We also investigate some cases of infectious disease on board ships.
Environmental Protection ( including noise)
We check that businesses do not pollute above legal limits by way of emissions into the air/ drains or on land. We investigate complaints of noise nuisance from neighbours or from business premises and incidents of fly tipping
Private Sector Housing
We check that houses (especially those that are subdivided into several flats/ bed-sits) meet legal standards for safety and for their facilities, licence Houses in Multiple Occupation, assist with drainage queries, carryout immigration inspections, and sample private water supplies.
How we do it
Business inspections are carried out to check compliance with the law and to advise businesses of changes and what steps they need to take to meet any new laws.
We also investigate complaints made to us that may reveal criminal offences. Enforcement actions, including formal warnings and prosecutions are taken where appropriate.
