Newport’s major regeneration programme and other new developments have created extensive construction work in the city.
Seeing an opportunity to support the construction sector, assist local businesses and upskill Newport residents, the City Council established The Newport Construction Initiative, the Local Labour in Construction project for construction workers in the city.
Supporting the construction sector in Newport is a top priority due to:
- the shortage of construction skills;
- the need to link local people with the job opportunities arising from the construction work taking place;
- the desire to help local contractors grow and become more competitive.
The Newport Construction Employment Charter is a voluntary code of practice which invites local construction companies to share in the regeneration of Newport.
The Newport Construction Employers Forum is open to all businesses operating within the construction sector in Newport and is designed to drive improvements in construction by sharing best practice, promoting employment and training and encouraging companies to work together to address issues faced by the sector.
