Best Bar None

Best Bar None logo

Best Bar None is a nationally recognised award scheme which aims to help tackle alcohol related crime, curb irresponsible drinking and promote safely managed licensed premises.

The scheme does this by recognising and rewarding licensed premises which:

  • have maintained a minimum standard
  • provide good management
  • provide a safe and enjoyable environment for customers
  • discourage binge drinking
  • prevent alcohol related crime and disorder

Best Bar None encourages licensees to act responsibly, taking pride in their premises and surroundings and in doing so, put something back into the City and their local community.

A new national Best Bar None web site has now been launched where you can find out how the scheme is being run across the country.

Apply online!

Why not apply to join Newport Best Bar None? If you have missed the deadline for this year, prepare yourself for next year - read more about the application process and then complete our online application form.

The rewards for licensees include the prestige of being part of the awards scheme, increased business within the area and lower insurance premiums resulting from the fact that they are running safer establishments. Best Bar None will highlight those premises that have gone over and above the minimum standard.

First year

In the first year of the scheme, licensees in the city centre, Caerleon, Bassaleg, Rhiwderin and Rogerstone were invited to enter the Best Bar None scheme. The aim is to eventually open the scheme to the whole Newport City Council area by 2010, ready for the Ryder Cup.

Best Bar None was launched at Newport’s Riverfront Theatre and Arts Centre. Licensees from across the city attended to find out more about the scheme and hear about the benefits it can offer. Professionals from the industry spoke of what BBN can achieve and members of Newport’s team were on hand to offer advice on completing applications.

Assessment

All pubs and night clubs that apply for Best Bar None accreditation are assessed against a national standard on many different aspects of their business which can have an impact on the safety, comfort and enjoyment of their customers.

This includes areas like: Capacity, Security, Drinks & Drunkenness, Drugs, Thefts, Disorder, Public Safety, First Aid, Event Control, Glass, Fire Safety, Building Safety, Transport, Prevention of Public Nuisance, Noise, Community Engagement, Litter/Waste and the Protection of Children from Harm.

Although there is no guarantee that there won’t be problems on a night out, venues displaying a Best Bar None plaque have demonstrated additional commitment to making sure that customers have the best night out possible in comfortable and safer surroundings.
