Countryside ideal for walking and cycling

Walking

The city of Newport is surrounded by beautiful countryside, with a number of fascinating walks including the Usk Valley Walk which follows the river valley for 50 miles (80 kms) between the Ship Inn in Caerleon and Brecon. The route is way-marked throughout with yellow arrows inscribed with ‘Usk Valley Walk’ and is maintained by the Countryside Services of Newport City Council, neighbouring Monmouthshire County Council and the Brecon Beacons National Park Authority.

A programme of guided walks in Newport and the surrounding areas is available throughout the year, and you can find more information on these and on a great variety of local unguided walks. The walks are separated into 4 downloadable brochures with 10 walks in each, ranging from short 15 minute tarmac routes up to half a day country trails.

You can also find details of walks on the South Gwent Ramblers website. Please contact the Tourist Information Centres for further information on walking in the area.

Cycling

The National Cycle Network (opens new website) in Newport provides opportunities for recreational use for cyclists and pedestrians. The Network runs through both rural and urban areas. Although many parts of the route are off road please take extra care when cycling along or crossing roads.

There are currently three NCN routes in Newport. Route 4 and Route 47 form part of the Celtic Trail (opens new website) while Route 46 forms part of the proposed Heads of the Valleys route along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. Maps specifically designed for cyclists are available from Sustrans (opens new website).

Now that the Sustrans/Connect2 bid has won the £50 million lottery fund, our local new cycle/walkway will be going ahead, providing sustainable links for pedestrians and cyclists between Newport City Centre, Caerleon and through the Usk Valley to Wentwood. This is just one of a national programme of projects which will be supported by this fund. Thank you to all those who took the time to vote for the scheme. You can see the Sustrans website for further details.

The Wales National Velodrome is also situated in Newport and has a 250m Siberian Pine track and an excellent range of facilities for casual users and clubs. Close by is the superb 15km Twrch Trail at Cwmcarn Forest Drive (opens new website) and mountain bikers can find more information at Mountain Biking Wales (opens new website)
