Recycling at Home

Image of Wastesavers collecting from kerbside boxes

What can I recycle?

Within Newport residents can recycle a wide range of materials by simply placing them in the receptacles provided and putting them at the kerbside every week.

Residents who are not part of the kerbside collection scheme can recycle using bring banks located around the city, communal recycling bins or by visiting the Household Waste Recycling Centre.

Boxes available to residents

Items that can be collected

Orange lidded bin

(Newport City Council collection)

    • Garden waste

    • Cardboard (all types)

Food waste caddy

(Wastesavers collections)

    • Food waste from kitchen scraps

Why not have wheelie bins instead of Wastesavers boxes?

Wastesavers boxes are designed for ease of use, for both the collector and householder, as they are easy to fill, carry and empty, and can hold the recyclable output of the average family. We can buy them for around £3 each.

Some councils have introduced a wheelie bin for all recyclables which means more expensive collection vehicles to automatically lift and empty the bins, an average £16 paid for each plastic bin bought, more staff needed for sorting recyclables at the depot and it often results in lower quality recyclate in the end.

Wastesavers operate a clean stream recycling method, where items are sorted at kerbside, as it is widely regarded as the most efficient method for collecting high quality, highest value recyclables

How to order recycling boxes and bins

Please note that until your boxes arrive, Wastesavers should collect your recycling if it’s sorted into separate plastic bags – eg one bag for plastic bottles, one for cans/tins and so on.
