Orange bin scheme

Orange bins can be used for garden trimmings and pure cardboard and are collected once a fortnight by the council.

The contents are taken to our composting site in Docks Way for composting or recycling and the compost is then used in Newport’s parks and school grounds.

Newport’s orange bin cardboard and garden trimmings scheme is provided by the council for free

You can put the following in your orange-lidded bin:

  • grass and shrub cuttings
  • flowers
  • leaves
  • old or dead plants and weeds
  • hedge clippings and bits of branches
  • small pieces of pure cardboard, not stained with food
  • empty cardboard boxes, not stained with food

For more information on the cardboard we accept, please visit the cardboard scheme help page.

Please note your orange-lidded bin will not be emptied if it contains:

  • household rubbish
  • a bin liner
  • garden waste in black bags
  • plastic bags
  • recyclables
  • kitchen or food waste
  • animal waste
  • soil or stones
  • Japanese knotweed
  • turf
  • cardboard stained with food
  • cardboard box contents that are not made of cardboard

Collection

The orange bins are collected once a fortnight, alternating with your rubbish bin collection.

Please put the bin out for collection by 7.00am on your usual collection day and make sure you can close the bin lid or it will not be collected.

To find out orange bin collection day in your street, please visit the Bin Collections page or contact the council on (01633) 656656

If you don’t have the space or cannot wait for your orange-topped bin why not try home composting?

Please email recycle for newport or call (01633) 656656 with any queries about the orange lidded bin scheme.
