Waste & Recycling

Introduction

Newport hits 31%

The council provides numerous waste collection services and helps to fund a kerbside recycling collection by partner organisation, Newport Wastesavers. Newport has achieved a 31% recycling and composting rate well ahead of the Welsh Assembly target by recycling and composting almost 24,000 tonnes of waste, which is equivalent in weight to almost 2,000 school buses. That’s 3,000 tonnes or 250 school buses more than last year.

See Newport’s waste and recycling teams in action on our waste and recycling video clip page and leave your comments using the feedback form on the video clip.

New! Prosiect Gwyrdd

This partnership of local authorities is looking for a regional solution to residual waste - the waste left over after recycling and composting has been maximised in each area. It’s an issue for all of us and your comments count. Read more about Prosiect Gwyrrd…

Over the 2006 to 2007 financial year Newport:

• recycled and composted over 13,000 tonnes at the civic amenity site and bring banks

• collected over 10,600 tonnes from its own doorsteps

• began collecting the magic figure of ‘1,000 tonnes a month’ at the kerbside

The amount of rubbish being landfilled has also fallen for a third consecutive year. The 50,000 tonnes buried in Newport during 2006-2007 is a 10,000 tonne reduction on the 60,000 tonnes buried in 2003-2004.

2x Recycling Scheme

The scheme to encourage residents to recycle more, by collecting rubbish bins once a fortnight, now covers most of Newport. Find out more by visiting the 2xRecycling Scheme web pages.

All Newport residents can recycle paper-based cartons, such as those made by Tetra Pak, at various points throughout the city. The cartons are widely used for milk, fruit juices, sauces and other liquid foods and drinks. To find out where the special carton recycling banks are located visit our recycling bank pages.

Residents can also put pure cardboard in their orange bins, together with garden trimmings. Find more information in the All on Board press release or cardboard scheme help page.
